Women's SP impressions: I don't think I've seen Viveca Lindfors skate before (didn't watch much of GP Helsinki), but I unexpectedly liked her. She's not that short, but she gives me the impression of being a tiny powerhouse somehow and she looked like she was enjoying herself.
Ivett Toth's costume is weird (I kind of wish she's gone full-throttle and made it a pantsuit) but I like her and her unusual music choices. You could tell that axel wasn't really happening far before she jumped, and her other jumps weren't fully rotated - hope the free goes better for her. I like her free program this year and it would be nice to see her skate it cleanish.
Nicole Schott is so pretty and mature-looking in this program. I did get something of an impression that she was going through the motions towards the end, but I enjoyed watching her anyway.
Mae Berenice Meite's old dress was pretty, but her new one is gorgeous. Something about her looked off today, though. I'm not sure what, but her performance just didn't feel all the way there.
Sofia Samodurova's program was my favorite. She always looks happy to be out there.
Free skate is going to be interesting! A Russian sweep is looking rather unlikely now, but there's not a lot of point difference between third and sixth place.
Side note, but I swear there needs to be a guidebook put out by ISU on how to record competitions that includes things like 'don't switch to far-away views and then zoom out further in the middle of a spin' and 'save the close-ups of the feet for the replays' and 'don't cut IN THE MIDDLE OF A JUMP'.
Ivett Toth - finally, a clean(ish) version of this free skate! She looked like she was concentrating really hard on getting through the jumps instead of being as expressive as she could be, but I'm happy that she's happy with that.
Mae didn't fall or anything, but she didn't seem to have a lot of energy today compared to usual. Hope she isn't sick or something.
Alina - she looked super awkward and off balance the entire program. I don't think the awkward choreo helps, but it was more so than usual. Was surprised she got a lvl4 on her step sequence, too, I thought I saw her hopping at least one turn, though maybe it was an illusion from the camera cuts. Did she grow more? Nerves? I'm glad she could at least smile afterward, but this does not help my worrying about her at every competition.
Not a huge fan of Sofia's FS, but she looked like she was having the time of her life out there toward the end and she grabbed the opportunity she had, so good for her.
Thrilled for J/C so far! Crossing my fingers for them in the FS, too, though given the roll they've been on this year, maybe they don't need it (please no more time violations, though).
Well, you got one wish out of two! I liked the previous ending to their FS (it looked cool) but they changed it probably to avoid that time violation... and still got dinged on it anyway, oh well.
I've been enjoying Petranovic/Souza-Kordeiru's Greatest Showman SP all season and I was so glad to see them get high GOE on their twist (it's good!) and the crowd getting into the music and cheering them on! Too bad about the throw flip, but good on them for trying a difficult element since they have nothing to lose. They have a lot of personality and I hope they can improve technically over the years!
I got so worried about Ziegler/Kiefer. :( Not because they made mistakes (not too unusual) but she was sobbing after the performance... and as I suspected, it was because of their coach who passed away recently. Ugh, my heart. Their programs this season seemed bland at first compared to last season's charming "500 Miles" SP, but they've really grown on me and I think only gotten more and more emotional depth with each performance, so I hope they do well at the FS. They do great lifts and need more recognition for that!
Boikova/Kozlovskii ♥ Charming and expressive while still maintaining sharp technique, which is pretty much my dream pairs quality. Not much to say, can't wait to see where they go.
J/C vs. T/M: I dunno if it's confidence or better SS or better stamina, but J/C seemed to be more light on the ice and less labored this competition, and their 1st place was well-deserved. I'm curious if they can maintain this quality in the FS. T/M going back to their old SP and honestly their whole team's FACES during warmup and in the k&c shows they take this competition super seriously, AS THEY SHOULD since they've been dethroned as the "it" pair in the minds of the judges and done nothing this season to dispel that. Personally I don't like J/C's style and find T/M to be black holes of charisma, so I'm rooting for the Chinese.
As far as Greatest Showman programs go, I think it's one of the better I've seen, probably because they use a slightly less bombastic music mix than most others. I just don't think it's great music for a single skater or pair because it's SO 'big' and OTT that everyone I've seen skate to it in person has just been overwhelmed by the music. (And it's one of those songs that gets extra jarring for me when mistakes start happening.) I think it's better-suited to a big showy group number, or maybe a synchro program.
Boikova and Kozlovskii were certainly charming!
J/C looked shakier in the FS, but I still enjoyed watching them more than T/M (don't know much about pairs scoring so I can't speak to that). I know charisma is a very individual thing, but T/M don't give me a strong impression, either. They just don't seem like they like each other that much when they're skating together.
Just caught up with the pairs FS! Sad to see Z/K withdraw but maybe it was for the best. :'( YAY BOIKOVA/KOZLOVSKII I hope this means they're a lock for worlds woooooo
I just don't think it's great music for a single skater or pair because it's SO 'big' and OTT that everyone I've seen skate to it in person has just been overwhelmed by the music.
I don't really agree, people like Aymoz or Marchei/Hotarek (miss them forever) could probably make it work. But this season most people seem to have picked it expecting the music to carry them and cover up their lack of IN/PE/projection, and that's a pretty rookie mistake since powerful music only makes you look even worse if you fail to perform as big (Samarin, I'm looking at you).
don't know much about pairs scoring so I can't speak to that
It's not that different from singles! T/M lost because they missed their combo (her 3T was downgraded), which is about 6-7 points out the window, and otherwise it'd have been much closer. T/M does a quad twist and all their elements are typically level 4, while J/C does a triple twist and sometimes miss levels. So... not that different from how points fall out in singles! The biggest difference is probably that pairs don't tend to do very difficult jumps, and many other elements (particularly lifts) have just as high/higher BV as jumps, so the elements are much more evenly scored.
I believe T/M like each other and are even dating, while J/C are not, so that's one of those mysteries of chemistry...
Maybe someone like Aymoz, or someone else who can really project and move dramatically... but it's not music that's going to carry you, no. I was mostly thinking of Samarin's program - it was not a very impressive effect when I saw him in person. I've also seen a dance team in person who were swallowed by it, though I think they also had a janky music cut that didn't help.
I see, thanks! I know a couple of the level criteria and GOE bullets for the pairs elements, but I'm not very familiar with them. I keep meaning to learn more, but at the moment, to me it's mostly 'wow, that sure was a lift, yay he didn't drop her' and 'it's probably not a good thing if it looks like he's dragging her through the death spiral, right?'.
Oh, are they? I thought they probably did like each other in reality, but I wouldn't have guessed they were dating from watching them skate. Though I don't think I'm great at seeing "chemistry" in general, J/C at least come across as friends to me when they're in the middle of a program.
Men's SP: Kevin! A little shaky on the axel, but he rotated his quad. His programs are always so entertaining. (His illusion spin is still not pretty, but I think it looked less bad than usual this time.)
I was not expecting that 4lo from Daniel Grassl. He looks a little flaily and awkward, but he's only 16 so I assume he's still growing and getting used to his new height; he seems like he might be interesting once he does. Wonder what one would call his last spin position. Upright... lotus spin?
Mikhail Kolyada looked so much better today than he has been this season - maybe not being sick was helpful!
Someone was waving a Russian flag in the sea of Spanish ones for Javier xD It wasn't my favorite performance, but it was sweet to see how much the crowd was there for him and I liked the moments where he seemed to really connect with them.
I know, I don't follow juniors so he came out of nowhere and bang, 4lo right out of the gate. A total "wait what" moment. His face/body type/arm flailing/attitude/quad all reminded me of a very young Plushenko which was also pretty amusing.
Honestly Samarin doesn't deserve PCS in the Kovtun/Brezina level (he's way more at Bychenko level) but what can you dooooo and that 4Lz-3T sure was sharp! Forever amused at Kolyada continuing to get 100+ scores with a 2002-era jump layout.
I wasn't paying that much attention at first, so I thought it was a 4S... was very surprised when the tech box popped up and had to rewind the video.
Forever amused at Kolyada continuing to get 100+ scores with a 2002-era jump layout. Jason Brown almost got there without even having The Quad. And beat both Samarin and Kolyada at Golden Spin last month without one, lol. I wonder how long until people start complaining that quads need to be given a higher base value again.
